Close to village settlements, amidst cultivable areas, are remarkable woodlands, known as 'Radis', which are found in Bundi, Kota, Baran and Jhalawar District of Rajasthan. Radis are most frequent in Kota. Adjoining these Radis are farmlands sharply demarcated from the surrounding countryside. Consisting mainly of Babul (Acacia nilotica) trees, they are only found within Vindhyan Hills of Hadoti region. This part of Rajasthan is well cultivated. In these woods an abundance of the Babul (Acacia nilotica) and Khejada (Acacia lecophloea) is found. In rare cases sagwan (Tectona grandis) radi may also be found. There was an interesting sandal (Santalum album) bearing radi, 'Nagara Khedi Chandan ki radi' found in block Sangod in Kota. Radis also yield fuel wood for building purposes, and branches and leaves to manure farmlands. These radis also have a 'Devsthan' or a Temple, a pond, grazing areas, funeral places and villagers are allowed to collect dead wood from these areas. Being flat areas radis are threatened by encroachment. Farmers have encroached on the fertile lands of radis adjoining their farms. 'Baugs' are also found in Hadoti region. These are ethno-silvi-horticultural gardens planted near settlements for fruit, fodder, fuel wood, medicine, NTFPs and shade. The biodiversity of these gardens consists of utility trees like Aam (Mangifera indica, Mahua (Madhuca longifolia), Kainth (Feronia limonia), Jamun (Syzygium cuminii). These baugs are backbone of indigenous method of drought proofing, acquirement of entitlements and food security. No other landscape is as productive and valuable as the Baug. A study was undertaken, in October 1996, to examine the ethnoagroforestry in Kota district. Trees are grown in farmlands and home enclosures for fodder, fuel wood, shade, fruit and small timber. Maximum density of trees was found in radis, block plantations and near habitations. |
