Vilasgarh is one of the many archeological sites in the Hadoti region. Though in ruins, this land of temples still attracts a lot of visitors. The sculptures, Carvings, Statues, rock paintings, the beautiful surroundings and its religious setting makes it a tourist attraction. The ruins of Vilasgarh are situated on the banks of Vilas River, close to the Vilas village. This place is about 120 kms from Kota on the Kota Shivpuri Road. Vilasgarh has been the center of civilization for years. Close to a waterfall by the name of Bardhka Fall, are scattered remains of ancient civilizations. Close to the Vilasgarh the river takes the form of a deep lake. This lake is called 'Kanyadah'. There is a very interesting story to the name. It is said that a princess had jumped into this water to save herself from dacoits. Since then this lake is called by the name of 'Kanyadah'. This lake is a very popular picnic spot with beautiful scenery around. People even call this place as 'Heaven on Earth' because of its beauty. The best time to visit here is during winters. Around this area one can see the remains of what must have once been a fort. Ruins of temples, and statues are scattered throughout the area. This place must really have been a land of temples. One can see the ruins of a fort, a palace called as 'Dweepo ki Chandni', an old Shiv and Jain temple and 'Devalaya'. Engravings on the walls of the Jain temple are still visible. Further ahead to this Jain temple is the famous 'Char Khambha' or the four pillared temple. Though rich in archeological finding, very little is known about the history of Vilasgarh. On the basis of the writings found at the Jain Temple, it is believed that this place was ruled by a Gaurh Brahmin Thakur Indul Sut Nayak and son of a Bijal Narayan. This area is believed to have been under the Parmar rulers with the Brahmin Thakur as their feudal lord. Archeological department has converted this 4-pillared temple into a temporary museum displaying the archeological findings of this area. The best time to visit Vilasgarh is during winters. During this season, the nature is at its blooming best and the temperature also is pleasant. |
