    .Architect

We all love visiting monuments and building. But if you are more attracted to the way the staircase was curved or that window, we are sure you would like to know how you can become an architect.

ArchitectYou need to study physics; chemistry and math at the 10+2 level, and if engineering drawing is one of the options your school offers, take it. Then go in for B Arch (Bachelor's Degree in Architecture). This is a five years course and includes subjects like architectural design, planning, art appreciation, building management, nature and environment, methods of construction, history of art and architecture, among other things.

Architects work with architectural firms, can have their own set up or work with the Government. If working with the Government the work generally involves urban development.

  • The Ministry of Urban Development is responsible for construction and maintenance of the Central Government buildings, residential accommodation and the management of Central Government land and property.
  • The Central Public Works Department (CPWD) is responsible in a wide range of projects such as housing and commercial complexes, educational institutions, sports complexes, hospitals, factories, hostels, airports, roads, bridges etc. CPWD employs qualified engineers and architects. It has a Central Design Organization, which undertakes complex structural design work and also provides consultancy services. CPWD works all over India with its construction work.
  • The National Building Organization promotes research in building and housing.
  • The Town and Country Planning Organization is the apex technical advisory body on matters relating to Urban and regional planning strategies, research, monitoring and evaluation of Central Government Schemes.
  • HUDCO is an apex housing body in the Public Sector, with the objectives of providing long term finance for construction of houses, setting up of new or satellite towns, financing or undertaking the setting up of building industries.
  • The National Building Construction Corporation Ltd is engaged with a wide variety of civil construction contracts like roads, bridges, flyovers, industrial structures, water treatment plants, television towers, housing societies, hospitals, hotels and other commercial complexes in India and abroad. The Corporation provides consultancy services too.
  • Hindustan Prefeb Ltd. looks after the manufacturing of pre-stressed cement concrete poles, water storage tanks and site construction works.
  • City Development Authorities at the state level and district level are involved in various construction activities.

These are some of the organizations, which offer opportunities to architecture graduates. Besides these, there are other institutes and agencies responsible for construction work or manufacturing of raw material need architects. At state level, Public Works Departments are functioning on the lines of CPWD. State housing boards, municipal corporations, cooperative societies, private builders function in this area at the state and district level. A number of research institutes such as the Central Building Research Institute and the Central Road Research Institute are involved in research and development in this field. Researches are conducted to invent new methods and techniques for construction and new construction material, so that the cost of construction may be minimised.

After XII (PCM ), entrance tests have to be taken for getting admission to an architecture college or an engineering college having architecture departments. B Arch is a 5 year course. Engineering drawing is a useful subject for prospective architects. Most architecture departments/schools select students through a written test. The post graduate course is generally of a duration of 18 months to 2 years.

ArchitectArchitects can also specialise in one type of work, like, hospitals, schools, or housing, or specialize in construction management or the management of their firm and do little design work. The choice of subjects ranges from Urban Designing to Regional Planning, Building Engineering and Management, Landscape Architecture to Architecture concerning traffic and Transport planning.

The Course teaches design, engineering and technology, humanities and arts and crafts. They aim at developing basic skills of drawing and an understanding of scale and measurement, basic materials and construction techniques.

Course structure involves laboratory studies and model making. Subjects like drawing, sculpture, ceramics, photography etc. are taught along with history of art and architecture, climatology, surveying and levelling, theory of structures and structural design, art (drawing and painting), materials and methods of construction, history of art and architecture. Estimating and costing are the important subjects studied in the three years. In the fourth year the major thrust is mainly on the facets which are practical, like methods of construction, application of the theory of structures, the do's and don'ts of professional practice, concrete design projects followed by the field training for 24 weeks which ends finally in the last year in a dissertation and complete design project called 'thesis'.

Admission Procedure and Application Deadline:

Entrance Test for B. Arch. Courses -The Council of Architecture conducts an aptitude test on an All India basis for colleges of Architecture, both private and government-run. Departments of architecture in engineering colleges select students on the basis of results of the entrance examination common to engineering courses. There is generally a section on aptitude for architecture. Other renowned institutions have special selection tests to identify suitable candidates.
Some colleges base their selection on class XII marks and also conduct an entrance examination. Some colleges like to judge artistic ability.
The Indian Institute of Technology selects candidates through a Joint Entrance Examination (JEE). The leading architectural institutions in the country are at New Delhi and Ahmedabad. They give a 30% weightage to class XII marks and the rest to the entrance examination. All colleges of architecture in the country only consider science students for admission to the course.

School of Planning and Architecture
4, Block -B Indraprastha Estate, New Delhi - 110002.

Selection on merit through entrance examination held in Delhi comprises of 2 tests of general knowledge and scholastic performance and IQ test and an aptitude test. The minimum marks required to qualify are 50% in this test. The test is in English.

Most architecture graduates begin working as interns at established firms. Once they have learnt the basics of the job, they can begin work on their own. The interns get paid upto Rs. 3500 to Rs. 5000. Once the internship gets over architects can earn anything between Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 20,000 a month. And once they have established their own firm, there is no limit to the amount of money they can earn. Earnings per project can go up to crores, depending on the complexity of the work involved.

Architects may be involved in all phases of development, from the initial discussion to final construction. Their duties demand a variety of skills like designing, engineering, managerial and supervisory.

Creative designing -
Some architects concentrate on design work. Design involves both artistic and scientific skills, i.e. producing something which is also technically feasible.

Managerial and administrative responsibilities -
This involves obtaining permission for building from the local authority, preparing and negotiating contracts, presenting drawings and estimates. As overall incharge, architects with Managerial and administrative responsibilities have to make regular visits to the site, checking the progress and quality of work. They are also responsible for Ensuring site and materials security and issuing instructions to the contractor.
